A more productive desktop

I’m always looking for ways to simplify things I do on a computer. I also really like the idea of consolidating information to be more productive. This article from Lifehacker caught my attention as a way to present information on your desktop and reduce the time it would take to go get it (manually). Similar options include:

Geektool (for Mac)

Rainmeter (for PC)

Update:
There is also “Fences” for the PC. It has been recently updated, but is also now a paid app $9.95.
